Diagnosis

An evaluation performed by a doctor and other women’s health specialists will help diagnose POP and can help you determine your health options. There are some doctors that can help you treat your medical condition.

Primary Care Physician

Commonly known as PCP or general practitioner (GP), this doctor does not have a specific specialty. Rather, is a good place to start and he/she treats a wide range of problems in patients of all ages. If it is your PCP that will refer you to a doctor specialized in pelvic organ prolapse.

Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OB/GYN)

OB/GYNs specialize in the care and treatment of women and focus primarily on pregnancy, childbirth, and problems associated with the female reproductive system. It is important to know that not all OB/GYNs treat pelvic organ prolapse.

Urologist

A urologist specializes in problems of the female and male urinary tract systems and male reproductive organs. Oftentimes, urologists have a subspecialty in female urology to treat pelvic organ prolapse.

Urogynecologist

Also an OB/GYN, a urogynecologist specializes in the care and treatment of women with pelvic floor issues, including pelvic organs prolapsed and female incontinence. A urogynecologist can provide expertise and offer a wide-range of surgical solutions.
